Waggel vs Animal Friends: One Policy or a Choice of Four

Two ideas of lifetime cover

Waggel sells one product: a lifetime policy with an adjustable limit and excess. Animal Friends sells a menu: accident-only cover at one end, two capped types in the middle, and lifetime policies at the other, with annual limits running from £1,000 to £18,000.

The philosophies differ, and so does the way each one hands you a bill after a claim. If you are choosing between them, the useful questions are what a bad year costs you on each, and what happens as your pet gets older.

Waggel sells a single lifetime policy, with limits up to £15,000. Animal Friends gives you four policy types, a wide ladder of limits, and a 20% contribution (your share of each claim, on top of the excess) once your dog reaches eight, ten for cats.

Limits, tiers and sub-limits

The ceiling is the first number people compare, but the shape of the policy matters as much. Waggel's limit is one ladder you can move up or down at renewal, currently topping out at £15,000. Animal Friends splits its lifetime cover into two shapes: an annual limit that refreshes each year, or a condition limit of £1,000 to £6,000 where each condition gets its own cap, refreshed at renewal.

The practical difference is a per-condition pot rather than one shared annual pot. Read which one a quote is built on before you compare headline figures.

Sub-limits are the quieter numbers. Waggel's dental cover stops at £1,000 for each year, inside the main limit.

Animal Friends scales dental cover with the tier you buy: £750 for accidents on its entry lifetime tiers, £1,000 for accidents and illness in the middle, and £3,000 on the highest tiers. Both expect a check-up within the past year before dental claims are paid. If dental work is realistic for your pet, that difference is worth pricing in.

What a claim costs you

Waggel's claim-day cost is the excess you chose at quote stage, charged per condition per policy year and reset when you renew. You can also opt into a 20% co-payment, a way to take on more of each claim yourself.

Animal Friends charges a fixed excess from its set ladder, and once your dog turns eight it adds a 20% contribution to vet-fee claims on top, at the first renewal after the birthday. On a £1,500 bill for a nine-year-old dog, that contribution adds around £300 to your share before the fixed excess.

Neither approach is free, and both are reasonable. The question is when the money leaves your account: Waggel lets you decide up front how much risk to carry; Animal Friends takes its share at claim time once the contribution age arrives.

Waiting periods and the fine print

New Animal Friends policies start accident cover after two days and illness cover after fourteen, with cruciate ligament claims waiting the longer period. Waggel applies a 14-day warm-up, its term for the waiting period, to any treatment on a new policy, with third-party liability still running for dogs. If your pet is accident-prone and you are buying cover today, that two-day head start is a real difference on the calendar.

Both insurers offer up to £2 million of dog third-party liability, and both charge a £250 property-damage excess against it. Both pay vets directly, subject to the practice agreeing, and both say ongoing eligible conditions can be claimed year after year on their lifetime policies, as long as the policy stays active.

Claims and support

Waggel runs claims through your account and contacts your vet for the paperwork itself. It says around nine in ten claims are accepted, and that claims usually take about seven days. It also says every member gets a UK vet nurse as a Customer Champion, and that video vet calls are unlimited and free.

Animal Friends takes claims through its own online system, publishes an average dog vet-fee claim of £1,019 for 2025, and includes 24/7 online vet support through the Joii app. It was founded in 1998 and donates to animal welfare charities.

Who each one suits

Waggel suits owners who want one product, one limit to shape, and control at renewal. It is also the simpler story on older pets, since the 20% option is yours to add or skip rather than an automatic age trigger.

Animal Friends suits owners who want choice: a lower limit to keep costs down, a specific policy type, or dental cover that scales with the tier. It takes new dogs at any age from four weeks, and neither insurer offers a multi-pet discount, so insuring three pets means three full premiums either way.

Quick answers

Does Animal Friends cover older pets?

Yes. It offers cover for dogs of any age from four weeks, with the 20% contribution added from age eight. Waggel states it has no age limits, so older dogs stay eligible.

Which has the larger limit?

Animal Friends can go higher, up to £18,000 a year on its top tier, but you choose the tier at purchase. Waggel tops out at £15,000 and lets you move the limit up or down at renewal.

Can both pay my vet directly?

Yes. Both say they can pay vets directly, but not every practice accepts it, so check with yours first.

Same-limit quotes and one worked claim will tell you more than the summary tables do. Waggel wins on simplicity and control; Animal Friends wins on choice, the higher ceiling and the two-day accident window. Pick the shape that fits your pet, and read the wording that will apply at claim time.
